Bounce on Wedges

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Do you know what bounce is?? Do you know where it is?? And what effect it has when playing?? Bounce is normally found on our sand wedges and lob wedges. They are located on the back part of the sole on these particular clubs. They effect how you hit the ball out of a bunker and how you hit the ball from the fairway.

For example if you take a very deep divot from the fairway we call that type of contact a digger. For this type of person you are going to need at least 12 degrees if not 14 degrees of bounce on your wedges.

On the other hand if you take very little divot you may need 8 degrees of bounce. The same can hold true out of the bunker. Just to let you know I have beenĀ fitted and use 8 degrees on my lob wedge and 10 degrees on my sand wedge. Again like anything else in golf, let a club maker and golf pro watch you hit balls when doing this and then get fitted to what they see and advise.

What you Should Have in Your Bag

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Beginners should I believe have the following golf clubs in their golf bags to get going:

  • Sand wedge,
  • pitching wedge,
  • 8iron,
  • 6 iron,
  • 5 wood,
  • putter.

If you you are golfer who shoots between 95 and 110 you may want to add with the following golf clubs, (3,5,7 and9 woods) then have a (5,7and9 and PW and SW) plus putter.

For those who shoot from 90 and lower you can have the whole bag filled, but instead of having 3 and 4 irons you may wish to put hybrid golf clubs in your bag and begin with a 5iron on down. Again its important that you have a PGA Professional check your swing out or at least a Master Club Maker look at you when making these decisions.

Loft on a Driver

Monday, June 9th, 2008

You want to hit a driver longer??? Other than taking golf lessons to improve your golf swing, getting fitted would be important for the right driver. Did a friend of yours just give his driver or did you just go into a golf shop an bought one because it look like your friends or you just like it??

Most people think that having a Driver with less loft will make the ball go further, that answer is WRONG. Most tour players have at least 8.5 to 9.5 degrees of loft on their drivers but they launch it somewhere near 13 degrees and have a spin rate of near 3,000.

So if you want to hit a bit longer and straighter with a Driver consider being fitted and start looking at lofts on drivers from 11.5 to 13 degrees. I did it and went from a 9 degree to a 10.5 degree driver and my spin rate is 3,100 - this added 15 yards more distance on the golf course for me.

Chipping and Using Different Clubs

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Lets begin this way whenever you have a chance you should use putter around the greens. Like most we chip with one club after this I hope you use many clubs. If you are a begginner to golf I would recommend that you use a pitching wedge or 9 iron for the fact that many of you Duff the ball when using a sand wedge.

This article is going to be based on the different shots around the green and how to play them. First situation, your off the back with a big slope and the flag is in a tough spot and you haven’t learned the FLOP SHOT??? How about using a 9 or 8 iron, to hit up the slope and let the slope pop it up on the green for you.

Your off the slide of the green and it’s mowed down for you but you don’t want to putt it?? Very simply pull your 3 or 5 hybrid out and use that it gets the ball rolling quickly with little effort.

Next, will call this a bump and run, the pin is in the back part of the green and you have to go over a ridge between you and the flag. I bet like most the first club you are pulling for is a LOB wedge. Hate to say it - wrong choice! Lets instead pull out a 7iron. Again take a less lofted club with very little effort and let it roll back to the pin for you.

Lastly, I learned this one from Stan Utley and watching Tom Watson win at Pebble Beach. Your golf ball has rolled off the green and the pin is close to you what club are you going to use?? I believe most would pull out their sand wedge or Lob?? But, instead we will call this the PUTT CHIP. We want to use a PITCHING WEDGE and we want to place the toe of the club into the ground with the heel up a bit. Take your putting grip swing the club like a chip the shot should pop-up a bit and roll toward the hole.

Again get out there and try those shots if you haven’t already it will come into play at some point. Aagin thank you taking the time out to read this and the other articles I have written. Try to practice these and other shots so when it happens to you, you can deal with it. Get out there had have fun.
