Back in Febuary the MET PGA SECTION sent out e-mails asking if they would like to work the 2009 US OPEN at the Bethpage Black Course. The day I choose to work was Wednesday June 17th at the 10th tee, my assignment would be to announce the players names. With that said I had a chance to announce the name of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Paul Casey, Robert Allenby and many more. What was also cool we had a chance to talk and meet with people that where to cheer on there favorite players. All the players that we had a chance to meet with where nothing but class. Must say it’s something that I will not forget unless I play in one and look forward to the chance to do it again.

When watching golf on the Golf Channel or CBS and NBC, you may hear the men or women say that the player was on PLANE or not. What does that mean for the golfer who may not know wether they are on PLANE or not. The first example would be if you swing the golf club back and it’s more behind your BACK SIDE you are a little FLAT or Rounded on the swing plane. The other way would be if you take the club back and you notice that your hands are to close to your head and or you have a FLYING RIGHT ELBOW. That would indicate that you are across the LINE. Well how can golfers fix this, when I took lessons from Top 100 TEACHER Brad Redding we did it two ways which I think can help you. First we took a NERF FOOTBALL with the laces of the ball facing outward. When I swung the club back we found that the laces where facing downward a bit. NO GOOD they should have been facing upwards a bit. The other way which help me alot was to take 2 clubs, one in my LEFT hand or lead as though I was going to hit balls. And the other in my RIGHT hand with me holding the club by the hosel. As I swung the clubs back on my back swing they would hit one another. Again NO GOOD, so I had to do it until they would not hit each other. If you like to try even another way get 3 graphite shafts, stick two together and up and over you back SHOULDER and other on a angle off your back HIP. You should be swing the club in between thoughs shafts. Remember the shaft on our golf club should be where the stitching on our SHIRTS meet at SHOULDER and BACK. Now you are on “PLANE” it can only help you with your golf swing.

For most amatuers when they come to me for a golf lesson there are a couple of things that we trying to change and one of them is POSTURE. This part of change plays a roll in TWO aspects of playing golf our SWINGS and PUTTING. For most who play golf they bend too much from their hips which puts too much weight to the balls of our FEET. Then there are those who squat, where the back side is too low to the ground in this case we have weight on our back HEELS. Helpful aids to make this change is to use a MIRROR and a 5 iron. Lets begin with this correct change, first stand nice and tall facing side ways to the mirror. Take the 5 iron hold it out in front of you hips, then PRESS lightly to where your back side goes back a bit and your top bends forward. After doing that I ask that you bend your knees to the point where they cover your shoe laces on your sneakers or golf shoes. When finished look at the MIRROR you should see that your shoulders are just outside your KNEE CAPS. This would be an ideal starting point for our FULL SWING and because our PUTTERS are shorter this will help you with you PUTTING to. Since our posture is a key component try to do this exercise at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes so they you can do it over and over again. If you need a reference please goto GOLF DIGEST.com and look at pictures of TIGER WOODS or BEN HOGANS FIVE FUNDAMENTAL OF GOLF.IF YOU FEEL THAT YOU NEVER HAVE DONE THIS CORRECTLY, YOU SHOULD FEEL A LITTLE TWING IN YOUR LOWER BACK. AND IN YOUR HAMSTRING AREA A LITTLE PULL.
